GIL SCOTT-HERON PROTÉGÉ BRINGS GODFATHER OF RAP
TRIBUTE EVENT TO LIVERPOOL

This September, The City of Liverpool College will host the
internationally renowned showcase performance event ‘The Revolution Will Be Live!’,
in partnership with Gil Scott-Heron's protégé Malik Al Nasir – frontman of Liverpool spoken word band Malik & The O.G's.

The event, created by Yesternight Productions, was first held at LIMF 2015, where it featured as the opening event of the festival. Initially held at St George’s Hall. it saw artists such as Talib Kweli, The Christians, Aswad and Craig Charles joining Malik & The O.G's  in paying tribute to the frontman’s late mentor, "The Godfather of Rap" - Gil Scott-Heron.

Following on from the successful launch in Liverpool, The Revolution Will Be Live! toured Canada in 2016, where Malik teamed up with another legend of the spoken word, the late Jalal Nuriddin of The Last Poets.

This year’s instalment will see the group returning to UK shores to collaborate with local students from The City of Liverpool College. As part of the collaboration, the students will take part in a full day of workshops and seminars from industry experts,
and will be challenged to produce a song in one day, which will be performed at
The Revolution Will Be Live! event on 27th September.

Hailing from the American South, Ka'Ba's rich, bass/baritone voice, emits a frequency - whose vibration is drenched in the struggles, trials and triumphs of the Black experience.  From enslavement and Jim Crow, to the Civil Rights era and the hip-hop generation and beyond.

His fusion of soul, jazz, traditional Black spirituals, blues, hip-hop, spoken word and world music, creates an aural panoply of the worldwide African experience. He has shared the stage and /or recorded with musical giants and cult underground icons such as; Amiri Baraka, Professor Griff (Public Enemy), Black Notes, Kim Jordan, (jazz keyboardist and long time band leader for Gil Scott-Heron), Precise Science, Dead Prez, The Last Poets, jazz keyboardist Weldon Irvine and more.

His passionate, soul-drenched, humorous and energetic performances have thrilled audiences across the United States and the United Kingdom, winning praise and accolades along the way.

He also hosts a weekly radio show, the “Afrikan Deep Thought” edition of “Jazz & Justice,” which can be heard from 3-5PM every Monday on 89.3 WPFW-FM in Washington, DC where he fuses his two loves: the various musical genres that inspire him, and social commentary and topics around culture, history and philosophy.

Malik & The O.G’s Reviews…

Raoul Juneja – NOW Magazine “Through his writing, music and live performances, Malik Al Nasir is continuing the legacy of his late mentor Gil Scott-Heron”

Glyn Akroyd – Bido Lito Magazine (Front cover article)

“Malik delivers a beautifully lyrical performance, another verse in the extraordinary life of an ordinary guy!”

Paul Lester, The Guardian “In 1984, a chance encounter between Scott-Heron and Al Nasir, then a self-described “illiterate street kid” in Liverpool, led to him taking the 18-year-old under his wing. Today, Al Nasir boasts a master’s degree.”

Michael Edwards – UK Vibe Magazine “St George’s Hall, Liverpool provided an opportunity for Malik to put on a fabulous tribute concert in honour of the great wordsmith, who guided him throughout his formative and adult years.”

Paul Bradshaw - Beyond Chaser "Mentored by both Jalal and the late great Gil Scott-Heron, Malik brought his own poetic life experience to the event and his no nonsense delivery came wrapped in the warm, versatile vocals of Cleveland Watkiss and Chantelle Nandi."

Alan O'Hare – Liverpool ETC"These are tunes to take things back to the earth and infect you with change."

RIta Carter Reviews…

Lynn Saxberg - Ottawa Citizen “Genocide was released on Carter’s 2009 second album, All of Me, a more fully realised follow-up to her debut EP, A Piece of Me, which was almost entirely self-made. The third instalment in the trilogy will be All of We, the one she’s working on now.”

Eric Scharf – Ottawa ShowboxRita Carter was my favourite performance while the sun was still shining."

Alan Neal (All In A Day) CBC - Ottawa "Rita Carter's songwriting roots go back a long way, in Ottawa
